The Manned Maneuvering Unit: Freedom with No Safety Net

The MMU looked deceptively simple: a boxy backpack with small thrusters, controlled by hand grips. It used compressed nitrogen gas to maneuver in six directions—forward, backward, up, down, roll, and yaw.

There was no tether.

There was no physical backup.

If the MMU failed completely, the astronaut would drift away into orbit, slowly becoming another object circling Earth.
