Something Knocked on My Third-Floor Window… Then It Spoke in My Voice”

I heard tapping on my bedroom window last night—slow, deliberate, and rhythmic, like someone lightly knocking with a single finger.

Tap… pause… tap… pause.

At first, I told myself it was nothing. Just branches brushing against the glass, or the wind playing tricks on an overtired mind. I pulled my blanket tighter and stared at the dark ceiling, counting my breaths, trying to ignore the sound. But it didn’t stop. It stayed perfectly steady, patient, as if whatever was outside knew I was listening.

Then a voice whispered from beyond the glass.

“Can you let me in? It’s cold…”

Every muscle in my body locked up. My heart began to pound so loudly I was sure it could hear it outside. I slowly turned my head toward the window, barely daring to breathe. The curtains were still, the glass dark, reflecting only my dim room behind me.

That’s when the realization hit me.

My bedroom is on the third floor.

There are no trees near my window. No balcony. No fire escape. Nothing that could reach this high.

The tapping started again, this time louder. Faster. Desperate. The gentle rhythm broke into frantic knocks, rattling the glass. The voice followed, closer now—and wrong.

It sounded exactly like me.

“Please,” it begged, my own tone trembling in fear. “Let me in. I know you’re awake.”

Shadows began to pool beneath the window frame, stretching unnaturally across the wall. They moved like fingers, thin and searching, creeping farther into the room with every breath I took. I squeezed my eyes shut and dove under my blanket, pressing my hands over my ears, silently praying it would go away.

The tapping stopped.

For a moment, there was only silence.

Then I felt warm breath against my neck.

A whisper slid directly into my ear, so close I could feel the shape of the words.

“If you won’t open it… I will.”
